Bregenz Floating Stage

An opera house with no roof and a lake for an orchestra pit. Quantum met in the audience.

Why go

An opera stage built out into Lake Constance, with 7,000 seats on the shore. Each production's set is a giant sculpture that stays on the water for two summers.

The place

Three countries, no border

Lake Constance touches Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and there has never been an agreed border on the open water. Each country simply looks after its own shore.

Started on two barges

The Bregenz Festival began in 1946 with a stage built on two gravel barges moored in the harbour. Today's stage sits on piles in the lake, with about 7,000 seats on the shore.

The shoot: Quantum of Solace (2008)

Quantum's secret meeting during Tosca, under the stage's giant eye.

Tosca on the water

In 2008 the floating stage was showing Puccini's Tosca, built around a giant staring eye. The production crew filmed Quantum's members meeting in the audience, swapping notes through earpieces while the opera played.

The chase through the seats

Bond breaks up the meeting and the chase runs through the festival building and out across the terraces.
