Cortina d'Ampezzo

An Olympic town lent Bond its ski jump, its bobsleigh run and its ice rink, all in one film.

Why go

The queen of the Dolomites, host of the 1956 Winter Olympics and again in 2026, ringed by pale limestone peaks that glow pink at sunset.

The place

The first Olympics on TV

The 1956 Games here were the first Winter Olympics broadcast live on television across Europe. Seventy years later, Cortina co-hosted the 2026 Winter Olympics with Milan.

A war in the rock

In the First World War the front line between Italy and Austria-Hungary ran across these peaks. Soldiers dug tunnels into Lagazuoi above Cortina, and you can walk them today.

The shoot: For Your Eyes Only (1981)

The ski chase, the ski jump, the bobsleigh run and the ice rink.

Olympic set pieces

For Your Eyes Only used the venues of the 1956 Winter Olympics. Bond is chased off the Trampolino Italia ski jump, down the bobsleigh track on skis, and meets a killer on the ice at the Olympic stadium.

Ski chase

The ski chase was shot on the slopes of the Tofana above town, with stunt skiers doing the falls.

Stand here

On the Corso Italia in the town centre, with the peaks all round. The ice stadium and the bobsleigh track are a short way out of town.
