Eilean Donan

Scotland's most photographed castle was blown up in 1719, rebuilt in the 1920s, and borrowed by MI6.

Why go

A castle on a tidal island where three sea lochs meet, rebuilt from ruins between 1912 and 1932. It may be the most photographed castle in Scotland.

The place

Destroyed and rebuilt

Government warships bombarded the castle in 1719, when Jacobite soldiers held it, and it lay in ruins for 200 years. Lieutenant-Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap rebuilt it between 1912 and 1932.

Three lochs

The castle stands where Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh meet, joined to the shore by a stone footbridge.
